Forum Spotlight: Q&A with Director, Talent Acquisition at Nationwide Chuck Mischley

As we prepare for our April Forum, we sat down with Chuck Mischley from Nationwide to discuss opportunities in advisory careers, job hunting as a student, and the future of the industry. Mischley is a panelist for our April Forum, “Building Careers in Wealth Management — Advisory Careers?

The upcoming Forum is taking place Monday, April 3, 2023 from 2-3 pm ET. The virtual event is free to attend and will dive into the advisory careers segment from the 12 Tribes of Financial Planning model. Register to attend here.

What are the major opportunities you see for young professionals entering the industry seeking an advisory career?

There is a major opportunity to have a fulfilling career helping people meet their retirement/investment goals while also having a stable and strong career within an industry that continues to grow.

Did you consider entering the wealth management industry when you were a student?

I did not but would if I could go back. Quite candidly, I didn’t have opportunities like the panel discussion to learn more about the financial service industry and advisement. I only was aware of the basics in college (401(k), etc.) and not the wide range of investment products.

If you could go back to your Junior or Senior year of college knowing what you know now, how would you change your approach to job hunting?

I would have changed my major and focused on business administration with specific focus in finance. I would have begun exploring (while still in school) obtaining my SIE and/or CFA.

What do you see for the future of the advisory career sector?

The sector and job market will remain strong whether you focus on individual advising or B2B distribution.
