Diversitas Symposium Featured in PlanAdviser

PlanAdviser reporter Natalie Lin wrote a feature article about our recent Symposium. PlanAdviser is a trusted publication and resource for retirement benefits decision makers. The panel, moderated by Tonia Bottoms, Managing Director, BNY Mellon | Pershing explored four myths about what’s keeping women and people of color out of the wealth management industry.

Panelists included Fanci Worthington, Vice President and Branch Manager at Cetera Investors, Becky Kariuki, director and business development officer at BNY | Mellon Pershing, and Marvine Laurent, SVP of finance and operations at Lenox Advisors.

In the piece, Natalie highlights how Worthington has positively impacted various communities using her expertise. She also busts the myth that only wealthy families have financial advisors, as all families need them.

Kariuki shared how fintech has changed the game in other countries by providing access to financial services to those who have typically been unbanked.

The panelists also shared their backgrounds to bust the myth that you must have a financial education to succeed in the industry. Worthington was a theater major, while Kariuki studied English.

Dr. Emily Koochel, a senior financial planning education consultant at eMoney and a Symposium panelist for “Career Paths in Wealth Management — Hint: It’s Not All Math, Numbers, and Sales!”, was also mentioned in the article for speaking up on gender discrimination in the industry.
