Our September Forum, “Building Careers in Wealth Management – Traditional Careers” featured industry experts tips and insights for those seeking a traditional wealth management career, in regard to the 12 Tribes of Financial Planning model. Angela Brill, the president at Prosperity Advisors, served as a panelist in our Forum. Additionally, she’s shared some of her own advice and insights in this Q&A.

What is your advice for those considering a career within this sector?

Look at more than one company and opportunity. Your first interview, internship or full-time position doesn’t reflect the entire breadth of opportunity in this sector. Firms have different personalities and cultures, sizes, growth trajectories, specializations and career opportunities.

What characteristics or traits do you commonly see among successful advisors or brokers?

The most successful advisors have good people skills and EQ. They have the ability to make a personal connection with a client and build relationships. This ability, though, usually develops over time with experience. So if you feel like this may not be your strength, don’t let this deter you from starting an advising career.

What are the major opportunities you see for young professionals entering the industry seeking a traditional career?

The biggest opportunity that I see is the opportunity for succession. With an aging advisor demographic, there is a huge opportunity for younger entrants to the industry to be able to team up with older advisors who are looking for someone to buy their business and continue serving their clients.
